ADA Requirements for Restrooms: What Every Business Owner Needs to Know

Toilet Height

Sink Accessibility

Sinks should be no higher than 34 inches above the floor and must have at least 27 inches of vertical knee clearance underneath. The sink must also be deep enough to allow a wheelchair user to approach it from the front. Faucets should be operable with one hand and should not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Lever-style, push, or sensor-activated taps are ideal.

Mirror and Dispenser Height

Mirrors, soap dispensers, hand dryers, and sanitary bins should all be installed within reach of seated users. The bottom edge of mirrors should be no more than 40 inches from the floor, and dispensers should be between 40 and 48 inches high. Placement should allow users to approach and use these items without obstruction.

Doors and Hardware

Restroom doors must be wide enough, at least 32 inches clear width, to accommodate wheelchairs. Doors should open with minimal force and remain easy to operate. Handles, pulls, and latches must be easy to grip and operable with one hand, without requiring tight grasping, pinching, or twisting.
